These are 2024’s top trending Halloween costumes, according to Google

Olympic breakdancers, Chipotle burritos and  pop stars walk into a bar. It may sound like the start of a bad joke, but online search data suggests the spectacle could play out across the US on October 31. Google's annual "Frightgeist" list has revealed 25 costume ideas that the tech giant claims are "trending" for Halloween. The list is based on September search data compared to last year and is also a sort of portrait of pop culture figures for 2024. Topping the list this year is Bob, the shrunken-headed ghost from the recent Beetlejuice sequel. Coming in second was viral breakdancer Ray Gunn, who recorded a spike in Google searches for the "green and yellow tracksuit" and "green tracksuit bottoms" worn by the Australian athlete during her controversial Olympic performance. In third place was "CatNap," a cat-like monster from the popular video game series Poppy Playtime.  Lady Deadpool and singer Sabrina Carpenter also made the top 10, with Google Trends reporting that searches for her heart-shaped corsets have increased significantly this year.

Five characters from  the Pixar film "Inside Out," expressing humanized emotions like envy, anger, disgust, fear and joy, made the top 25. So did the Chipotle burrito (No. 11), Sonic's nemesis Shadow the Hedgehog (No. 20), rapper Soulja Boy (No. 24) and three other characters from "Beetlejuice." (Both "Beetlejuice" films were released by Warner Bros., which is owned by CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.) Google also looked at the most popular costumes for kids (led by Red from Disney's "Descendants"), pets (Dogpool) and couples (Deadpool and Wolverine).

This year's Frightgeist also includes a  costume map for the U.S., showing local preferences that aren't always reflected in the national data. For example, Dolly Parton was the most popular costume in Tampa, Florida, and Rapid City, South Dakota, while Anchorman character Ron Burgundy topped the list in Marquette, Michigan. Frightgeist also noted that Beetlejuice was the hottest party theme of the year, while Mummy's Hot Dogs topped the creepy food category.
