According to a CNN poll, several of the dozen or so Republicans who were "fake electors" in 2020 and are under criminal investigation are serving as official electors for former President Donald Trump in battleground states this year.
Another 16 Republican electors in those states are voter objectors who claim President Joe Biden's 2020 victory was fraudulent. Together, these 2020 vote objectors and fake electors account for more than one-third of the 82 electors chosen this year to support Trump in the seven states where the president tried to overturn the results in 2020. These Republican activists have been interfering with the electoral college this year, especially in key battleground states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, which could lead to post-election chaos if Trump loses and tries to overturn the will of the voters again. Their participation also confirms that many in the Republican Party continue to fully support President Trump's election denial. "Those who engaged in voter fraud should be held accountable and ensure it never happens again," said Lindsay Miller, research director at Informing Democracy, a nonprofit that works to secure the vote counting and election certification process.
